Empowering the Next Generation of Scholars

While refugee students possess drive and ambition, systemic barriers have historically limited their access to higher education in Boise. 1R's College Bound program bridges this gap, equipping high school seniors from refugee backgrounds with the tools to not only enter college but to thrive there.

Our Core Pillars

We simplify the path to post-secondary success through five targeted areas of support:

  • Logistical Readiness

  • Resource Navigation

  • Identity & Career Exploration

  • Self-Advocacy Training:

  • Family Engagement

Eligibility and Growth

This year-long program is open to high school seniors in the Treasure Valley with Refugee, SIV, Asylee, or Humanitarian Parole status.

Completion is just the beginning. Graduates who fulfill program requirements transition into the 1R Scholar program, receiving ongoing academic mentorship, professional networking, and financial assistance throughout their college journey.

At the beginning of College Bound I didn't understand how I was going to do all the applications and FAFSA, or how I was going to pay for college. My parents were already telling me to wait for a few years before I start, but I feel I would have forgotten everything. But I am glad that I joined College Bound because it helped me stay on track for my future.

I learned that our past does not define us. What defines us is our future, If It wasn't for my College Bound teachers, I wouldn't be who I am today.

LEAH BARAKA

Before College Bound, I thought about going to college, but it was impossible for me—till my last-minute decision in senior year [to join the] College Bound program. I treasure my education and now I understand every step to go to college. I am preparing myself to improve my English, like reading, writing, and typing to become a successful student. I treasure every little thing Mrs. Kayla and Mrs. Slichter encouraged in us. I be patient to myself without disappointment now.

There are a lot of things I learned through College Bound, but the most important were how to complete my FAFSA, apply for several scholarships, learning how to advocate for myself, and how to cope with the tough college life. This really helped me a lot because before College Bound, I had no idea really on what to do, I knew I wanted to go to college but I didn't know how. College Bound showed me how!
