How to Choose a Career

 

  1. Learn about yourself

Spend a few minutes completing the assessments linked below. Record your results on this worksheet.

 

2. Check out possible careers

Use the career clusters list to learn more about an industry that looks interesting to you.

Choose three potential industry clusters that you might like to work in, and list them on the worksheet.

 

3. Narrow it down

Choose up to two jobs in each cluster that are interesting to you. Write down the title, salary and education required for each job on the worksheet. Watch the associated video for each.

 

4. Make an Action Plan

  • Take a class in the major or majors you are considering to see if you like it.

  • Talk with a 1R mentor in your field to ask them about their experience with the career.

  • Meet with your college advisor to create a graduation plan for the career you have chosen.

  • Attend 1R career events in your field to network.

  • Find an internship in your field.
